About The Role
We are seeking an experienced and strategically minded Financial Accounting Manager to lead our financial operations and ensure strong financial governance across the institute.
This is a key leadership role within the Finance team, responsible for the integrity, accuracy and effectiveness of financial accounting function across The Florey Group.
As the Financial Accounting Manager, you will oversee the Institute’s financial accounting function, manage financial operations staff (including AP/AR and a Finance Analyst), and ensure compliance with statutory, taxation and regulatory obligations.
Working closely with the Head of Finance and senior stakeholders, you will lead critical work across financial reporting, audit, investment accounting, insurance management, systems improvement, and financial governance.
Your expertise will directly support The Florey’s mission by enabling robust financial stewardship within a complex research and funding environment.
What You'll Do.
Financial Operations & Accounting
• Lead day‑to‑day finance operations, including AP/AR oversight.
• Ensure accurate and timely processing of financial transactions.
• Oversee general ledger integrity, fixed assets, balance sheet reconciliations, inter‑entity accounting and group consolidations.
• Manage banking, cash flow monitoring, term deposits and liquidity.
• Oversee accounting for The Florey Foundation, The Florey Future Fund and all investments.
• Maintain strong financial record‑keeping systems.
Taxation & Regulatory Compliance
• Support preparation of BAS, GST, FBT and franking credit calculations.
• Ensure compliance with ATO, ACNC, ABS and other regulatory reporting frameworks.
• Maintain the Compliance Obligations Register.
• Manage insurance policies, renewals, claims and premium assessments.
Financial Reporting, Budgeting & Audit
• Prepare accurate monthly financial reports for internal stakeholders.
• Lead the external audit process, including preparation of audit material.
• Prepare the Annual Financial Report for Board approval and AGM presentation.
• Contribute to forecasting and budget development.
Finance Systems & Process Improvement
• Act as a key stakeholder in major system upgrades and ERP implementation.
• Drive process improvement, automation, and workflow optimisation.
• Enhance data quality, financial controls, and reporting frameworks.
• Identify and implement relevant AI‑enabled tools and efficiencies.
What we're looking for
Qualifications
• CPA or CA qualification (essential).
• Degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline.
Experience
• Extensive experience in financial accounting within a complex organisation (NFP, research, education or healthcare desirable).
• Strong knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and taxation requirements.
• Proven experience leading finance teams and supervising AP/AR functions.
• Demonstrated experience preparing statutory financial statements and managing external audits.
