The role

The Research Governance Manager oversees all aspects of research governance at The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, including oversight of clinical trials, biobanks, and clinically focussed research activity. The role includes the provision of operational leadership for all sponsored and investigator-initiated studies that are carried out by The Florey.

 The purpose of the role is to ensure that research programs across the organisation are planned and implemented in a consistent and coordinated manner, in alignment with the relevant regulatory and governance frameworks, including the Australian Code for Responsible Conduct of Research. A key function of the role is to ensure compliance with these frameworks through internal audit.

 The Research Governance Manager provides operational and strategic advice to the Research Governance & Integrity Committee and the Executive team.

Key Responsibilities

The candidate will be responsible for:

  • Provide leadership and support to researchers and the Research Governance & Integrity Committee in relation to research governance matters.
  • Support researchers with the development, implementation and performance monitoring of their clinical research activities.
  • Lead governance committees, including the Research Governance & Integrity Committee, ensuring that the governing principles of The Australian Code for Responsible Conduct of Research are always adhered to.
  • Lead risk-based management and monitoring of clinical studies/trials.
  • Assist in matters of research integrity.
  • Lead the review of trial sponsorship requests and review current Florey sponsorships.
  • Oversee clinical research risk management.
  • Promote good research governance practices through adherence to Florey research policies, processes, standard operating procedures, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP). Creating a responsive and strong patient-outcome focused culture, ensuring that processes and procedures are consistently implemented.
  • Develop and maintain positive and effective relationships with key collaborators and stakeholders including but not limited to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Austin Hospital, Melbourne Academic Centre for Health (MACH), Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) and other research institutes.
  • Actively engage with all researchers engaged in clinical research at the Florey, including research involving the use of human tissue, to build effective relationships, understand their needs and assess research performance. The provision of constructive feedback and education to researchers in relation to research governance is an important part of the role.
  • Administration and governance of investigator-initiated research activity.
  • Administration and governance of all commercially sponsored clinical trials.
  • Coordinate, negotiate and execute (in conjunction with the Manger Legal Services) all legal and contractual requirements prior to or during the establishment phase of clinical studies/trials.

The role attracts an annual salary offer of $126,238 (Professional Staff Level 9) commensurate with experience.

About you:

The successful candidate will have:

  • Degree in a relevant discipline with subsequent experience or a combination of education, training and relevant experience.
  • Broad understanding of the health and medical research environment in Victoria and Australia and medical research institute and/or hospital research environment and processes.
  • Extensive knowledge of Good Research Practice and processes to undertake clinical trials and conduct research.
  • The incumbent must be able to manage and reconcile competing demands sometimes within tight time frames. They must be able to plan, take initiative, co-ordinate and work with a wide range of people and undertake timely and appropriate consultation with colleagues to ensure tasks are completed on time and to high standard. The role requires level of maturity, sound judgement, high level interpersonal skills including tact and discretion and independent decision making on routine matters.
  • The Research Governance Manager is expected to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of Florey research policies, processes and standard operating procedures.
  • Significant experience in a similar position, including leading teams in clinical research.
  • Ability to manage the development and implementation of stakeholder initiatives; to build rapport and create lasting relationships with partners and stakeholders.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, the ability to listen, understand and work with a variety of different roles and stakeholders, both internal and external.

 Experience with the below is desirable, but not essential:

  • Experience in the implementation of quality improvement, work practice reform and change within a large organisation.
