Large Animal Surgery Technician

About the role:

The candidate will be responsible for:

  • Undertake and coordinate daily animal husbandry activities including provision of food and water, and optimum levels of hygiene of animals and works Monitoring animals daily and recording in accordance with animal ethics and Veterinary Services requirements.
  • Liaise with researchers to optimise the health and welfare of animals under experimentation. 
  • Tick@lab system for keeping track of animals in/animals out and animal ethics.
  • Perform techniques including induction and maintenance of anaesthesia under the initial supervision of Mr Tom Vale.
  • Holding and handling animals to allow for examination, treatment and surgery by researchers and surgeons, in accordance with animal ethics.
  • Assisting with pre operation and post operation procedures and monitoring.
  • Assisting with administration of anaesthetics and intubation of animals for surgeries. Perform maintenance of anaesthetic equipment.
  • Preparing and sterilising (via autoclave) of surgical instruments.
  • Placing animals in cages for recovery from surgeries and perform post-operation monitoring.
  • Giving analgesia and antibiotic injections to animals, before and after surgery.

This position is a fixed-term, full-time role, ceasing 31 March 2026. The role attracts an annual salary offer of Higher Education Worker 5-2 (HEW 5-2) $70,858, commensurate with experience.

About you:

The successful candidate will have:

  • Completion of a Diploma of Applied Science (Animal Technology) or relevant Degree in Animal Science/Technology.
  • Proven and demonstrated knowledge and experience in handling large animals in an experimental laboratory and performing animal technical services.
  • Good organisational and time management skills, including the ability to organise work to meet priorities and deadlines. 
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with:
  • Victorian legislation: Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986
  • Vic and Regulations 2019.
  • Industry standards: Code of Practice for the Care and Use of
  • Animals for Scientific Purposes.
  • Agricultural Victoria reports compliance.
