About the role:
The Victorian Brain Bank (VBB) is a research resource facility that provides researchers, both in Australia and internationally, with post-mortem human brain tissue and related samples to facilitate research into various brain and mind conditions.
The role involves the preparation of brain tissue and related samples for research projects and to provide support to the VBB Coordinator to manage safe, efficient, and compliant operations of the VBB.
The candidate will be responsible for:
- Responsibility for the preparation of frozen brain tissue and related samples supplied to researchers.
- Shared responsibility for the preparation/dissection of fresh brain tissue at time of donation.
- Assist with the general maintenance of the VBB collection.
- Maintain ultra-cold freezers and laboratory equipment in good working order.
- Assist in general laboratory duties.

This position is a fixed-term, part time role (2 days per week) ending on 31 December 2024. The role attracts an annual salary offer ranging from Research Assistant 2 (RA2) $73,709 to Research Assistant 3 (RA3) $77,695 pro-rata, commensurate with experience.

About you:
The successful candidate will have:
- Bachelor of Science degree in a field relevant to neuroscience.
- Minimum two years’ experience in a laboratory environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of human brain anatomy.
- Desirable experience in the dissection/preparation of fresh and frozen human brain tissue samples.
- Experience with the use of specific equipment used in the laboratory.
- Strong organisation skills including the ability to work consistently and effectively.
- Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise effectively in a team environment and with internal and external users.
- Experience working in a scientific, medical research or higher education environment and/or tertiary qualifications in science.
Experience with the below is desirable, but not essential:
- Experience with FileMaker Pro.
