Core Animal Services operates 7 days per week and the incumbent is expected to contribute to overtime work on weekends and public holidays as required.

 

The candidate will be responsible for:

The position of Animal Technician is expected to play a major role in all aspects of animal management. The role requires a high degree of knowledge and experience in animal breeding, identification, and sampling techniques with the ability to assist and train other staff when required.

This position is a fixed-term (ending on 28 February 2025), full-time role. The role attracts an annual salary offer ranging from Increment Level 5 (HEW5-1) $69,470 to Increment Level 5 (HEW5-8) $79,801, commensurate with experience.

About you:

  • Completed relevant course in animal care, Diploma of Animal technology or equivalent
  • Previous experience in a Bio-resources facility, particularly those with similar capacity to the FINMH
  • Proficient working in an SPF environment with a high level of aseptic technique, thorough understanding of modern IVC technology
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
  • Attention to detail with all tasks, excellent at data management and animal welfare monitoring.
  • Understanding of Australian and Victorian animal welfare guidelines and regulatory requirements
  • Expert in rodent husbandry and transgenic colony breeding strategies, able to assist with breeding strategies to meet researcher requirements.
  • Desirable to be proficient in specialised animal techniques and procedures such as:
    • Administration of substances in rodents via PO, IV, IM, SC, I.P, I.N routes.
    • Blood collection Mandible, Saphenous, Tail Vein.
  • Team player and excellent communicator
